About Martin
Martin Kyle is Director, Operational Risk and CISO at Central 1 Credit Union, the primary liquidity manager, payments processor and trade association for member credit unions in B.C. and Ontario. Central 1 also acts as the Group Clearer with Payments Canada for the national credit union system.
Martin currently oversees operational risk at Central 1 where he applies his understanding of cyber security, business continuity, software development, technology operations, and data analytics to problems facing the modern payments landscape. His regular communications span audiences from developers of source code to boards of directors accountable for organizational oversight to industry consortiums defining the future state of payments. He has been involved in the design of international standards, government and corporate security policy, commercial software releases, predictive risk models, and patent awards.
What motivates you to do what you do?
I am motivated by my personal values; these align well with the values and principles of the cooperative movement. In particular, I have always had a strong concern for community and the roles in which I engage reflect my need to contribute in this manner.
How do you de-stress?
I am fortunate to live in a place where I can run-commute and so, every day, I get nice delineation between the different stresses of the work day and home life. As an added bonus, the regular exercise gives me energy, contributes to my happiness and allows me to have mentally clarity.
When are you most fully yourself?
I am most fully myself when stripped of technology and left in the mountains. Whether I am out for a trail run, backpacking, paddling, or on the slopes; I am preparing for those quiet moments in the middle and the ends where I reflect on the present and contemplate the infinite.
How do you avoid being complacent in your role?
I believe change is the antidote to complacency. From early on, felt that I should get comfortable being uncomfortable; the underlying idea of constant change opens me to continual learning and collaboration with others that challenge my perspective.
If you could have any other job (past, present, future), what would your business card say?
