Silicon Valley heading to Calgary for Canada's 1st Fintech Cup Startup Challenge

FinTechs compete for $25,000 prize purse 

Five FinTech startups will compete for Canada’s inaugural FinTech Cup on June 15th in Calgary at the 2016 Payments Panorama Conference.  

In addition to the $25,000 prize purse, the FinTech Cup will provide an opportunity for teams to make a five minute pitch before a panel of judges that include Silicon Valley’s 500 Startups, BitGold CEO Darrell MacMullin and conference attendees.

Mike Sigal of 500 Startups, Darrell MacMullin of BitGold and conference host Amanda Lang will be on hand to award the FinTech Cup to the winner.

The competition is co-presented by the Canadian Payments Association and the Digital Finance Institute in partnership with the BC Technology Industry Association.

“The pace of change in the global FinTech sector is remarkable. We now have many new and well established players in the payments ecosystem, and the FinTech Cup at Payments Panorama 2016 is a great way to bring them all together. The entire ecosystem must work together to innovate, embrace change and provide a great payments system for Canadians,” said Justin Ferrabee, Chief Operating Officer for the Canadian Payments Association.

“We have a young, but robust and growing  FinTech sector in Canada. The Digital Financial Institute is delighted to be working with the Canadian Payments Association, jurists 500 Startups, Darrell MacMullin of BitGold and BCTIA to nurture Canadian FinTech talent and to brand Canada as an emerging FinTech leader”, said Christine Duhaime, Founder of the Digital Financial Institute.    

The application deadline is May 31, 2016.
